Thanks Sue :)

I agree that it's easier online to initiate conversations, friendships, etc - perhaps the anonymity of it makes it this way? Yet at the same time, perhaps we should be taking our online comfort offline and communicating just as easily?

Maybe we need a crash course in the art of talking to one another?

1st of all, Happy Birthday!! Turning 40 isn't so bad :D In response to your blog I agree that most people seem to make friends easier online than in person. I find that most of the people I chat (IM) with are men; some married, some not. A couple of them told me they are bored with their marriage and/or feel they are taken for granted. If that's the case then they need to talk to their wives and work out their problems - right? I'm a sounding board for them - that's ok, I don't mind. However, I've always been happy in my marriage and have never taken my husband for granted. Now even more so - I wouldn't want him lurking around the Internet for female companionship. But I digress...

I'm quite a social animal; I'll talk to just about anyone :P ... If I initiate a conversation, it's usually an observation and it's with another woman. It's not always a conversation or a comment. Sometimes it's just a smile and/or a nod; it's still communicating. I also communicate when no one listens and that only happens when I growl and bad drivers on the road from the confines of my own vehicle :P LoL!!! Express Yourself - and do it often :D

Hi George,

That's the sad thing - I think the more we advance technologically, the more we retreat socially, unless it's online. I remember being a kid and always saying hello to people on the street, and vice versa.

Now, you're thought of as a bit weird if you even make eye contact. C'est la vie and the price of advancement...

Happy birthday Danny!

As for the issue you raise, teh interwebs beat real life anytime simply because it is much easier in this medium to find like minded people without the awkward restrictions of you know... distance and country borders.

Perhaps humanity really is on a course of alienation from itself, but for every action there is a reaction. This situation can't last forever and the only thing that I'm certain of in this world is that change will come usually in the opposite direction that the people expect it to occur.

Regards, George

Have we really come so far as to only communicate via technology now? Has the art of real conversation died, or is it still there? Do we need the facade of technology to allow us to open up to people?<p class="ubervu_reaction_link">via <a href="http://www.ubervu.com/conversations/dannybrown.me%2F2008%2F10%2F21%2Ftaking-social-media-into-the-real-world%2F">uberVU</a></p>
