This is the key difference, Eric, and one you make well - it's about the "we" as opposed to the "I". Sharing, encouraging and helping will result in increased awareness of your brand with your clients' success. And that has to be a good thing.

Perhaps we should re-tag it "social we-dia"? ;-)

Thanks Jason, Josh & Danny! I treat my social media networking the same as I treat my in-person networking at events. I'm listening. Who is looking for help? What do they need? Is it something I can help them with? Can I recommend someone I know & trust who can help them? Social Media is all about relationship building. Businesses that come into it with an open mind and can think of it in this way will prosper. Those that are just jumping in thinking it's a way to make a quick buck will ""not get it" and eventually will disappear.

Thanks Josh, glad you enjoyed the piece.

I agree with both you and Eric 100% - yes, we're all in this to make money and succeed. But surely if your customers are succeeding because of you, that engenders the type of brand loyalty that you just can't buy?

Hopefully as more businesses (and those that make the decisions) come to grips with everything social - and I mean SOCIAL - media has to offer, we'll all see the results and their subsequent benefits quicker.

"What is your reason for using social media?
c. The ability to promote my customers products or services to people who trust my opinion"

Social media at it's finest and most misunderstood intention. I find it relieving that people in your position are meaning to use social media to do just that, socialize. The selling part comes naturally after that.

"Are businesses effectively using social media? If not, what can they do to improve?

As I mentioned earlier, I don’t feel most businesses are effectively using social media. Most jump in like they would with an advertising plug and without looking to connect with the community first. Then they assume that social media doesn’t work so they abandon it."

I think it would be impossible for me to convey how frustrating it is to be involved in a project that includes a constant uphill battle not to "sell too much," then be told to scrap it because it didn't work. Of course it didn't work, we tried to sell something with every single statement we made.

Great post as always, Danny. I look forward to more.

I agree, Jason. I feel that the people that currently "get" social media - whether it's as experts, creators of platforms or similar - need to encourage as many people as possible to take part. Show us how to use the platforms effectively; let us have easier ways to personalize to our needs; make interaction more social and less of a popularity contest.

Hopefully this will happen sooner rather than later. So far, from what I've seen, the signs are good.

Great article.
What I personally find reading this, is that I feel pretty much exactly the same. Which makes me wonder if this is a general view, and if so, why are the larger players not working to improve their platforms?
We need to work on making social media more accessible, while at the same time less intrusive; more interactive and more niche specific.
I have to agree with Eric, and plead, please everyone stop sending me "invitations" on Facebook!
