If Pepsi Owned Twitter

zyzo-twitter-2

While browsing the blogosphere, I came across one that raised the question whether Pepsi should buy Twitter. Curious, I raised the same question on Twitter itself, and the responses made it clear that it wasn’t such a strange question. Twitter offers the perfect audience for the right company looking to take a foothold in social media. So, should Pepsi buy Twitter? And if not, who should?

When Tribes Go Bad

Seth Godin’s new book Tribes encourages people to become leaders. To stop accepting the status quo and to challenge everything, to make the changes now that will free you from the norm and begin building your own tribe. So why do so many of Seth’s target audience continue to be anything but leaders?

Would You Trust a Company That Ghost Blogs?

ghost-blogging

As more businesses realize they need to use social media to increase their audience, one of the results has been the growth in company blogs. From the largest corporations to the smallest one-man bands, business blogging is growing in both popularity and reach. Yet many of these business blogs are never written by anyone in the business itself – rather, they’re outsourced to ghost bloggers instead. Does this make a difference? Should a company blog be written by someone from the company or is the message the same no matter who writes it?

The Completely Pointless Google Experiment

google

Google is without a doubt the most popular search engine in town. With over 2/3 of the world’s web traffic coming from Google results, it doesn’t seem to be in any danger of losing its lofty position any time soon. But does it really know all the answers? In a slight drift from the norm, I decided to type in some random and bizarre questions. Would Google have the answers, or are there some things even they don’t know?

When to Blame the Agency and When to Blame the Client

bad-idea

Pharmaceutical company Motrin made a huge faux pas recently. The company released an advert aimed at why moms need painkillers or pain relief through medication. Unfortunately, the way they went about it only served to alienate the very audience they were after. They’re not alone – many companies make this mistake. And with the power of social media to make the mistake a hugely costly one, Motrin could be in for a very long brand reparation campaign. Yet is it all Motrin’s fault or does the blame lie with the agency they employed? When does recommendation stop and responsibility begin?

Dear Santa – A Letter of Hope

santa-reading

Every year millions of children sit down to write their Dear Santa letters. With hopes of having been a good boy or girl throughout the year, wishes and dreams are placed on a piece of paper and sent out to the great man of Christmas. Yet does it just have to be children who have a Dear Santa letter? Couldn’t we, as adults, have our own Dear Santa letter? Asking for a better world, for a kinder world, for a sharing world? Surely Santa wouldn’t mind us encroaching into our childrens’ world for just a little bit, would he?

For Those About to Bob – We Salute You

ignorance-of-faculty

For all its plus points, social media is still a vastly misunderstood medium, particularly by businesses. The story of Bob is a prime example (not real name). As Chris Brogan points out in his blog post, Bob is all too typical of companies today that don’t understand social media. Even though Bob was showing his employers in a good light, they weren’t happy. So why is this? Why do so many businesses just not get it? And can their mindset be changed?

Why Jason Calacanis is the Ultimate Twitter Fail Whale

When Jason Calacanis, the CEO of human powered search engine Mahalo, recently had to lay off 10% of the company’s employees he seemed to be genuine in his sadness. An email to his employees and a post on his blog attested to how difficult the decision was, and that he was truly sorry for needing to make this decision. If that’s really the case, why is he splashing out $109,000 on a sports car and asking Twitter users to try and pitch the story to the media?
