Are You Holding Back Your Creativity?

Did you doodle at school as a kid? Did you play make-believe games with your friends that took you to other worlds real and imagined? Did you have an invisible friend?

Our minds are so free as kids. We imagine anything and everything. Our creativity knows no limits and our imagination is boundless.

When do we lose that? When does our creativity go into hiding, and we settle for the ordinary and the mundane?

Some people never lose it. Some people keep the imaginative strength of children into their adult lives. You see it around you every day.

Who would have thought you could run a car on electricity? Or hear music on the go? Or watch 3-D landscapes in a 2-D setting?

Your creativity is still inside you. You never lose it. If you look close enough, you’ll see it there underneath the surface, just waiting for you to renew your acquaintance.

Go find it. Rediscover the creative part you haven’t used since childhood. It can be used anywhere. Your personal life. That board meeting. That business plan. That marketing idea. That blog post. That kitchen recipe. Anywhere.

Your imagination and creativity are powerful tools. They can separate you from the crowd. The possibilities they offer, in life and in business, are endless – the only barrier is you.

When was the last time you used yours? Really used it?

“Freshness is key” – These are the words written in magic marker on the mixing console at my friends recording studio in Athens Vermont. I've worked with Pete for over ten years, either recording my own music or playing bass on other CDs. He has an uncanny way of re-inventing himself and, because of this, is regarded as a thought-leader in the recording industry (he's written several articles for Tape-Op magazine).

The question itself is a most useful tool: How I stay fresh?

This topic hits home, Danny. My nephew is 7 and he's a very bright and creative kid (I know, we all say that about our family), but in school, he wanted to stand at his desk. So instead of telling him t sit, his teacher realized he learned better this way and moved him to the back of the room. She told him that as long as he didn't disrupt class, he could stand at his desk.

It reminded me of myself. In my journalism classes, I always learned better and was more creative when I was able to move around. If I could get up and walk around the room or be somewhere other than in front of a desk – I was good. Put me in front of a desk and tell me to sit there, I get bored and distracted.

So yes, what brings out your creativity? So often we look at people who do things differently as odd. We're a society of putting kids of meds if they're a little different. We need to foster this difference and encourage creativity. Bring those ideas out and open people's minds.

We loose our creativity when we learn as a child that something can be wrong. It is this fear of being wrong or being judged to be wrong stops us taking a risk and being creative and possibly wrong

I recommend checking out this Ted video:

    http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/ken_robinson_says_schools_kill_creativity.html

It should be compulsory viewing for all parents and teachers.

One clear sign of whether I am using my creativity is when I experience work as play. The business world in particular focuses so much on productivity and analysis that it tends to beat the creativity out of us. Yet I think finding ways to use our creativity is at the heart of what it takes to work smarter, not harder. Besides, how else are we going to get out of the mess we are in?

What a wonderful post Danny! Thanks!!

I wonder if ADHD is a form of creativity, Kasey? Like you say, what we might see as disruptive could be a creative streak trying to express itself? Interesting thought, one to chew on for sure – cheers!

I once again use creativity to empty my head, to create focal point a grounding point like an anchor. The interesting factor is that I have chosen writing above drawing despite the fact that I am vocally better in my [native] english and [2e language ]dutch so to love the challenge to express myself in writing, thru this, I am learning why I mentally ‘trip’ every so often. Funny thing is creativity come to me mostly, because then I am driven to write.

I think it's very important to know yourself very well to be able to put yourself in an environment where can thrive creatively. Danny Mullen's “Communications Catalyst” just has a post talking about ways to jump start your creativity (http://www.davidwmullen.com/2009/07/14/the-key-...). Some great ideas for how to get inspired in the comments section!

    Hi Danny!

I can't remember the last time I reflected back on my childhood and the imaginary places my mind would take me – it really was awesome! This is a great post; I think it may just get some people to think outside of the box we tend to put ourselves in : )

I think that's a great question, John. Even the greatest creativity will go stale if you don't keep it fresh, so it's an important complement to the creative side.

Great point, Mark. Maybe it's time we looked at what we differentiate as wrong when it could just be different (both as parents and teachers). It tells a tale when some of the most creative outlets at the minute are in the video games market – the very thing that we often hear is bad for our kids. Go figure…

  52. Danny

Right, exactly! It's like Kneale attests to below – taking away the fun can leave just robotic fools, if you like. Why not grab the creativity and let your company (or personality) really stand you apart from the rest? We don't all have to fit into a certain mold.

It's like the shirt and tie dress code for businesses. Does the way you dress really reflect on the way you work? No. Superficial may make an initial impression but it's the real deal behind the clothes that get the results.
