So it wasn’t that long ago I mentioned I was moving my comments system to DISQUS. The fact that the system was being used on more blogs, and also had social media integration with its Reactions feature that pulled stats from anywhere else your blog was being discussed, seemed pretty cool. Yet, lately, DISQUS seems to have had some continued issues. One is that the Reactions (the comments from Twitter, Digg, etc, that show up as trackbacks) seem to be…
One of the questions I’m most asked is how do you sell social media to your boss or client. Sure, we’re in the space and can see the numerous benefits, but how does that transfer to a wary client? A lot of that comes down to your belief in how social can work for businesses, and how you relate your client or boss’s needs into their social media equivalent. It’s not always easy, but it’s not rocket science either. With…
There have been a lot of new definitions and suggestions coming to the fore over the last 12-18 months about what PR stands for. The traditional version is Public Relations, and has been since as long as anyone can remember. However, solid PR folks like David Mullen suggest it should be People Relations, as does online marketer and social media guy Ari Herzog in a post from earlier this year. Often it’s called Press Relations or Print Relations. I had…
There’s currently an amazing event taking place around the social web called Tweetsgiving. Part of the Epic Change organization led by Stacey Monk, Sanjay Patel and Avi Kaplan, Tweetsgiving is a global celebration that aims to change the world through the power of gratitude. Its aim is to continue the wonderful work started at last year’s inaugural Tweetsgiving, where a classroom was built in Tanzania. You can read the full story of Tweetsgiving here. This year, the event is being…
Last week I introduced you to Friday Five and how I was looking to offer a diversion into the weekend. So, without further ado, here are five random offerings for you. Cheers guys, have a great weekend! Blogger Corner. One of the blogs that has been springing up on my radar recently is that of Jackie Adkins. In the words of Jackie himself, it’s “a street corner where you can… talk about marketing, the business world, social media and life…
Kurt Greenbaum is the director of social media for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. In a recent post, he mentioned how he’d been pro-active at contacting the employers of someone who left a vulgar comment on a blog post. The person in question resigned. The flak started flying in in the subsequent comments, and Greenbaum refuted he stepped over-the-mark, maintaining that the comment had been vulgar. Hmm… pot, kettle, black, anyone? Or is it okay to be abusive yourself about an…
We’ve been brainwashed into thinking the materialistic matters, but without those that matter to share with the materialistic is hollow. Do we really need to send that final email? Make that last phone call before calling it a night? There will always be jobs for those that want to work. It may not be the jobs that we want, but they will be there. Loved ones… not so much. Don’t let your victories be hollow. Pin it
In preparation for the upcoming winter fest, my wife bought me some Thinsulate gloves. These things are the coolest ever – transforming gloves! Basically they’re fingerless and have a strip of velcro attached to the back of each glove. Attached to the velcro (and sewn to the glove itself) are mitten tops. So, I get the best of both worlds. I have driving gloves if I want them, or simply fingerless gloves if the weather’s cool but not too cold…
Most people know by now that I love the new Headway 1.5 premium WordPress theme. If anyone asks what theme they should go with on their blog or website, I always recommend Clay Griffiths’ theme. Now that Headway 1.5 has been officially released, however, the real power behind it will start to show as more people start exploring its engine room. This goes for normal bloggers like me as well as hardcore developers and coders. For example, one of the…
