Third-party Twitter client Hootsuite has just released an update that takes it pretty much head and shoulders above the likes of Seesmic and Tweetdeck, amongst others.

The company had already made a substantial update recently, with the introduction of HTML5 compatibility on its Twitter client. This update included site analytics via Google, geo-search options for local tweets, drag-and-drop image uploads and InstaLoad for better performance issues all round.
Now, however, it’s upped its game considerably and offers the best Twitter experience for business and personal use.
What’s New at Hootsuite
Today’s update takes Hootsuite from being a still great personal Twitter client to a fully loaded business Twitter client as well. Instead of just being another cool way to use Twitter, Hootsuite gets you (as a business) closer to the mindsets of your customers by positioning Hootsuite as a social CRM package.
So what are these goodies?
Filter by Influence
Using the Klout algorithm to determine how influential a Twitter user is, you can determine how a certain user’s information is listened to. Do they get a lot of retweets; are they speaking with the types of audience you’re after; do they have a wide reach? This is the kind of information that’s perfect for a social marketing or outreach campaign.
Filter by Keywords
Kind of like Twitter Search but specifically on filtered keywords, this allows you to track conversations relevant to your business, and that of your competitors. Think of how you can hijack their conversations if they’re not looking after their customers.
Follower Insights
This is, quite simply, an awesome addition, and lets you know where your connections are elsewhere online. Using a mix of usernames and public information, you can check other social accounts as well as what their business skill sets are. This could be a great recruiting tool, or simply a great way to enhance current relationships.
Organization View
Along with CoTweet, Hootsuite is one of the best Twitter clients when it comes to having teams from the same business working on the platform. Great for customer service or tech team support. With organization view, you can find and add team members more easily and make the whole team/user experience offering better-suited to your business goals.
Hoot to Zendesk Support
Tying in with the team option, customer service issues raised via Twitter can now become full-on raised tickets to that particular team. You can then track response time and how well a situation was dealt with – perfect for analyzing internal procedures and building customer/brand loyalty.
I’ve been using Hootsuite for the past month or so now, having been a die-hard Seesmic user previously. I still love Seesmic and the user experience it offers, but with the updates Hootsuite have made, it’s a different ball-game altogether.
And with premium accounts coming soon for those that want enhanced teams, analytics, social feeds, support and more, it looks like Hootsuite is going to be the measuring stick that other Twitter clients need to start measuring up to.
What’s your take? Big step for Hootsuite or not enough to make you change from your current client? And what would you like to see from its upcoming premium account?

Wow! That’s a pretty big shakeup, Danny!
I’ve stayed away from third party Twitter applications – primarily because they all seem so flaky in performance.
With this latest update to HootSuite, I am going to take a second look at it.
Two questions on the sidelines for you:
1. What are your thoughts on MarketMeTweet? Especially given that it is already a paid application/service.
2. Where do you see these third party Twitter applications going – in terms of their longer term product visions and roadmaps?

Hey there Kapil,
To be honest, I haven’t really looked at MarketMeTweet properly yet, but it looks interesting for sure. I’ll be checking that soon.
I think there’s a need for a third-party client that makes Twitter easy to use, yet also a powerhouse business tool. Stuff like sentiment, influence, analytics, etc, are all key at gauging how you’re viewed, as well as how others can share your brand.
Hootsuite’s just taken a huge step toward this (in my view, anyhoo) and if an application can mix the coolness of Twitter with the solid info a business needs, it could become a great revenue-maker for the host developer.

I’m into HootSuite now – and going strong.
I did a featured post on Social Media Notebook talking about my first impressions about HootSuite.
I’m impressed by the ability it provides me to:
1. Control clutter and noise
2. Saving drafts
3. Filtering by influence.
Also, I was a wee bit disappointed by two factors:
1. Lack of clarity on the paid and premium accounts – and what they will bring to the table, or take away from me.
2. The paid iPhone app which is a tad pricey in the iPhone world at $2.99
But loving HootSuite right now – unless TweetDeck and Seesmic can pull a trick out of their hats!

there’s a ton of convergence in this space. look for the enterprise players to catch up on a lot of these one off features and close the loop this next quarter.
fun times ahead

Hmmm … I like the convergence thought. No doubt we will see other players catch up, perhaps innovate better.
But you’re right Will – fun times ahead

Very cool! My response is similar to Kapil’s. Although I’ve tried many third party apps – some terrific – over the 15 months I’ve been on Twitter, I keep coming back to the simplicity and security of the website and manage my stream with Lists.
But with this added value, I’d be missing out if I didn’t take a look. Thanks for the heads up!

The more I’ve been using Hootsuite the last few weeks, the more impressed I’ve been. I think there’s something there for any and every user.

Ok, Ok, the push I need to make a change. Very interesting stuff. Like I said before, my strategy is basically to just let you figure it out and then go do that.

Thanks for the recommendation Danny. I checked it out and it does seem to have many great tools that top TweetDeck and Seesmic.
For anyone not using a Mac, you will need to install a browser to application addon to use it directly from your desktop. http://hootsuite.com/apps
I went with the Prism application and it seems to be doing a decent job.

Cheers Jay.
I checked out the Chrome option, that seemed pretty cool too. Though I primarily use it from the web on my Mac, so haven’t gone fully into the desktop version yet (though Prism looks an interesting tool).

I love the Klout Score filter and how you can configure Retweet style (native or old school).

I’m still a fan of TweetDeck, but I started trying Hootesuite about a month ago when I needed to set up a team. Now that they’ve made these updates they just might keep me. I’ve been on the hunt for a free or reasonable “dashboard” for listening, analyzing and engaging. I’d like to get as close to a one stop shop as possible.
Agreed – I think the first company that gets the integrated dashboard running well will be the one that might just become the standard.

Hey Danny, I’ve been a huge HootSuite fan from the start and even convinced a few other users to switch. However, I must admit that the latest release has some bugs. The biggest set back for me is that although I only have one social network (my Twitter account) set-up I constantly need to acknowledge that this is the one I want to use. Therefore, I can’t retweet as quickly as I used to. The retweet will load, but HootSuite demands that I tell it I want to Retweet from my account. Quite frankly, it’s frustrating that I contacted HootSuite_Help about the issue last week but they haven’t responded claiming that there’s a high volume of support tickets right now. They requested that I try on different browsers, which I did (Chrome and IE8) and sent them a screencast to boot. All I want to do is set my Twitter account as the default so that I can easily retweet again, seems like that would be a quick fix.
I’d like to continue using HootSuite so I hope the issue is resolved in the next few days.
Thanks for letting me vent.

Always welcome to let off steam here, Ileane.
I noticed that too, and just thought it was a quirk of the system (I actually mentioned it as an update request in their feedback forum).
Although I only find it happening on new tweets, and put it down to the fact I have Facebook and LinkedIn set up as well on the dashboard.

I am a TweetDeck fan…never have liked Hootsuite because it’s Web based and because I have all of my columns perfectly set up in TweetDeck. But this makes me think I should take another look at Hootsuite. Thanks. A lot.
Hey there Gini,
There are actually a few different desktop variations available for Hootsuite:
