Evolution of the iPod

Next year, Apple’s iPod will celebrate its tenth anniversary.

Say what you want about Steve Jobs, the guy knows how to create an icon. Before iPod, we were all supposedly happy with our Sony Walkman’s (or Discman’s, if you were posh).

Who would have thought that a computer manufacturer would turn all that on its head and change the way we buy and listen to music forever?

In an early celebration of the iPod’s tenth anniversary, here’s a look back at the evolution of this pop culture icon, as well as some of the big stories of the time (make sure to switch to 480p mode to view it).

Hope you enjoy, and what’s been your favourite iPod so far?

My fave iPod is probably the white iPod shuffle. More for sentimental reasons though, than it being the best iPod. I still have a iPod Photo that's loaded up with all our music and connected to the stereo.

It's amusing to see you ask about my "favorite" (with American English spelling) iPod, when I've only owned one -- and still use it at the gym: an iPod Nano with 4GB of storage.

But I bought mine in 2006ish so I'm a latecomer.

I've only owned one iPod in my life. I held off buying one for a long time, and I bought a mini about 5 years ago. It's held up really well and suits my purposes. The past year or so I haven't been very nice to it (it's not in a case, it kind of rolls around my purse) in the hopes that something will happen to it and will give me an excuse to buy one ... but it's a pretty sturdy thing.

Ha, you're not wrong there, Sue Anne - I have a Mini too (had I known we were going to do that video, I would have taken it into the office).

You're right - they're tougher than Iron Man and Hulk put together :)

A truly amazing yet simple piece of tech dev that has changed the way the world listens to music.

I was also posh. haha.

What is it with all you posh folks?? ;-)

Amazing to think we now use iTunes as a description for online music the same we say "Google it" for search purposes.

A huge sign that something's become iconic.

Yeah, the shuffle is pretty cool. Although the "not being able to see the songs" part can be frustrating if you have a ton of songs on there.

Then again, that's why it's called "the shuffle" :)
