Two Blog Posts You Should Read Today

0 Shares 0 Shares ×

The great thing about blogs is they offer a great starting point for discussions. The blogger offers his or her take, and then the comments provide even more juice.

So I’d like to point you to two blog posts you should read today (both, handily enough, over at the awesome Spin Sucks blog).

PR and communications blog Spin Sucks

Five Signs that a Social Media Star’s Reputation is Spin is a great guest post by the very smart Liz Strauss, and looks at how many social media heavyweights are beginning to believe in their own importance. Or, were never really genuine to start with (I’m sure we all know a few of these).

PR Pros: Stop Treating Bloggers Like Second-Class Media is by Spin Sucks hostess Gini Dietrich, and is a continuation of the conversation started last night when she guested for the #sbt10 Start Blogging Today chat on Twitter. The title says it all, and there’s a great conversation in the comments from both sides.

Both of these are great posts with terrific points both in the post themselves and the comments that follow. Check them out when you have a minute, and leave your take.

And then pop back here tomorrow when I share an example of a PR agency that got it bang on the money for blogger outreach.

Cheers!

GREAT links, thanks for sharing! I was fortunate to be able to attend college and receive a Bachelor's in Public Relations, and to be perfectly honest, @ginidietrich is a breath of fresh air. I decided to pursue PR for the exact reason PR professionals have jobs: the people. I love people, I love interaction, and I love public speaking. I mean, what more could you ask for?! It's an excellent connection to your customers/clients/etc.'s thoughts and needs, an avenue to really make a difference and the fact that some people abuse that confuses me, but unfortunately doesn't surprise me. Kudos to @Danny Brown and @ginidietrich for being true PR professionals and setting a great example from those watching and learning from you!

@Danny Brown @ginidietrich Well that's awfully kind, but no need for super humility, you know you're pretty solid too, Mr. Brown! Ha ha great stuff, glad I can read and learn from you two!

@ginidietrich You're absolutely right. But thing that amazes me the most about PR blunders/the snakes in PR is that they always think they are smarter than the next person/client/etc. It's as if they seem their dishonesty/lack of genuine nature manifested in whatever way will go unnoticed because they're just so much smoother than everyone else. That's never the case. If you remain honest and genuine, that in and of itself would solve so many problems before they even have the chance to happen!

Keep preaching, you've got my attention/a fan in me!

@JMattHicks @ginidietrich Couldn't agree more, Jeremy. As Gini says, I guess the benefit of the craptastic ones make the good ones like Gini and you look even better still. :)

Though doesn't help the poor clients that are stuck with them...

@JMattHicks What a nice thing for you to say! I guess, when you really get down to it, every profession has their snakes and their unethical professionals. It just really bothers me and, I figure SOMEONE should say something about it. And I'll keep repeating it until people begin to pay attention and we create a movement. Until then, at least they give me blog fodder!

You have an example of a PR agency that got it right?! I can't wait to see who it is! When I read Liz's submission to Spin Sucks last night (I love getting previews!) my first response was, "WOW!" She is so smart and tells it like it is. I love it! And thanks for having me on #SBT10 last night. I certainly learned a few things (and some of them make my blood boil) that I can take back to my team, but also blog about in the hopes of changing practice in the industry.

@ginidietrich I was reading Liz's post, and my mind was ticking over - "I wonder if she means Person X" - kind of like the folks we've been talking about recently... ;-)

Had some great feedback about last night, and a lot of bloggers happy to see there are good and great agencies and people out there. Now they just need to connect :)
