Today’s question is from Erica Allison, owner of Allison Development Group, a strategic public relations and marketing firm located in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Allison asks:

“Is there a general protocol for promoting or tweeting your archived posts?

Thanks for the question, Allison, and I hope the video helps.

If you have a question, you can send it in via the form below. There’s also a file upload option, if you want to send in a picture of your favourite Sunday Brunch place.

And who’s to say they’ve already read that one, anyhoo? In that case, perhaps adding an editorial note to the blog – a current commentary on the content, picking out the best of the comments, or again that topical spin mentioned above – is a good way to offer them something new to get their teeth into. So why not give them a list of your “greatest hits”?

Just because a post is old doesn't mean it isn't good. I think it does good to keep the information coming, even if it is "old."

I think the repurposing of past blog posts in light of current events is a great angle, as it directs newer readers to a relevant post in a timely manner and gives past readers a chance to reflect on info they've already read in a new light.

I personally have no problem seeing bloggers reprise older material, though I can imagine a few hardcore readers might resent the taking of time already given. In that case, perhaps adding an editorial note to the blog - a current commentary on the content, picking out the best of the comments, or again that topical spin mentioned above - is a good way to offer them something new to get their teeth into.

Overall, I think the concept will do far more good for your audience than harm and is well worth investigating further. Thanks for the insight Danny - and for a great question, Erica!

Hey there Steve,

Great idea - I know I've seen tweets that are prefixed by "oldie but goodie" kind of thing, just to let existing readers know that it's an archived post.

And who's to say they've already read that one, anyhoo? ;-)

Great answer Danny !!

I use a different wordpress plug-in service called Tweet Old Post. I'll have to check out OPP and compare them.

John

FYI: I submitted a question, hope to hear your response. :)

Danny

Hey there John,

Yeah, seems quite the popular plug-in, I'll have to check it out. Just saw your question come in - great question, look forward to answering it soon.

Cheers! :)

Danny and Erica, I'm doing this a little by revisiting old blog posts in a new one. Reviewing what I wrote then, is it still valid now, are there new sources or updated examples on the matter. Haven't seen a pick up in traffic or comments yet, but it's one way of recycling them. Off to check out Jennifer's idea. FWIW.

Danny
Danny

Hey there Davina,

I've seen a few people do that - seems to work really well, and like you say, posts can be evergreen so there's always something that, while it may be "old", is as current as ever.

Cheers! :)

Great question Erica and something I have been wondering for some time. I see Dino tweeting some of his older posts sometimes and I always wondered. Thanks for asking Danny and mate thanks for answering.

Anytime, mate, and that's also the great thing with something like Hootsuite (which I forgot to mention in the video). You can schedule your tweet, select a custom URL, schedule in bulk for different posts, and then you have a bunch of analytics to look at afterward to tweak your approach. Can't argue with that. :)

I use Tweet Old Post plugin. Its only 20-30% effective. I think thats plenty. I want to disable it, but every now and again someone discovers a blog post and they go bonkers over and yet I published it 4 months ago lol..Tweet Old Post is the only way they would have found it. hth

I also use it and love it. People that find it a bit annoying are those who are reading a blog all the time and following the person on Twitter, so to them it gets annoying because they've already seen the post. But there are so many new followers that discover you and want to read all the great posts so I don't plan to stop using this plugin any time soon. I also see people RTing my old posts and making comments on them, so I would say it is working. Danny, the video is great and I love this brunch series. I am also going to send a 100% stupid questions, but I am Bosnian (like Dino) and I sometimes have trouble understanding. Thanks and have a great week!

Danny
Danny

That's the thing, Brankica - there's always someone new that hasn't read it. Even your subscribers could miss, if they don't check in their RSS one week. So never a bad thing to refresh memories. :) Saw your question, and not stupid at all - will definitely be a future brunch. :)

Hey Danny,
Thanks for the shout-out/link. That was part of Christopher S. Penn's Evergreen 5 meme, and was a lot of fun. This year I have spent a lot of time pulling up old content on the blog. I find that I get asked a lot of questions by my readers I've already answered, because they weren't following several years ago. So I've made it a point to post an old post every afternoon to Facebook, and this gives new life to a lot of great content. I also use a plug-in on the blog called wp Related Posts which works if you include dates (which is important with my content, as social media tools change, and content can become outdated.) It lists old posts that you've placed in the same category as the post you've written. A lot of my old posts have gained new life through this plug-in as well.

Great topic! Thanks Danny.

Cheers!
Jennifer

Hey there Jennifer,

Hehe, it actually reminded me that you had tagged me, so my apologies - I'll get on that post. ;-)

The Related Posts option is a great one - I use something similar here, and it's interesting to see the analytics and how many click through to another post once finished with the current one.

Add a Popular Posts widget to your sidebar, and people need never leave your blog again. Well... that's the ultimate plan, anyhoo! ;-)

Dan,

Great video that you offered here and explaining how to re invite your older posts to the top of your blog. This is really good information right here especially since a lot of people as you mentioned are not using Twitter or Facebook and might have missed that post from before. The post that Jennifer Fong did was really a good idea to do right there. That could really get a lot of attention. Thanks for sharing your ideas on this topic.
