Sunday Brunch – Improving Your Google Traffic

Julius Meinl

Julius Meinl coffee house in Southport, Chicago, is Gini's favourite Sunday Brunch place.

Welcome to a new episode of Sunday Brunch, where we talk about your questions on social media, marketing, business tips, entrepreneurship and more.

Today’s question is from Gini Dietrich, CEO of communications firm Arment Dietrich and owner of the popular Spin Sucks blog. Gini asks:

“Danny, when I saw you speak at PodCamp in Toronto, you said Google is your number one driver of traffic. Our number one driver is Twitter, then Facebook, then Networked Blogs, then Hootsuite, and THEN Google. We’d love to switch that around so Google is number one and the others follow suit. We use the SEO all-in-one-pack and SEO Scribe. We’re well ranked on Google and through the search engines, but we must be doing something wrong. Any insight?”

Thanks for the question, Gini, and I hope the video helps.

If you have a question, you can send it in via the form below. There’s also a file upload option, if you want to send in a picture of your favourite Sunday Brunch place.

Cheers, and see you same time, same place next week for some more Sunday Brunch chats.

Sunday Brunch Question Form

Got a question on marketing? Social media? Business? Strategy? Something similar? Cool - just send it in here, and it could be picked to be discussed on my Sunday Brunch question-and-answer series every Sunday.

Don't forget to include your web address and where people can find you online. And if you have a picture of your favourite brunch place, upload it and I'll post alongside your question.

Cheers, and look forward to hearing from you!

Yes, BRILLIANT! We call it "blind blogging" when companies write blog posts without doing keyword research.

It's so easy to do and only takes 5 minutes (could take more if you're really getting into it) -- but the result is higher rankings on Google for your target KW && hundreds (or thousands) of secondary/long tail keywords.

So easy to do, yet so few companies / bloggers do it.

Of course, you don't ALWAYS have to blog around a target KW... but if you want to improve your Google ranking, it's a good idea --

Would you agree Danny?

PS: I'm Arsham, partner @ WebMechanix -- I met you from NittyGriddy's blog .. she gave you a nice recommendation, check it out here: http://disq.us/1r38qy

Wow, that was full of useful information. Thank you!!! So if I understand you correctly, I need to change the format of our guest blog posts and not put the bio in the first and last paragraphs. ?

Thanks again, Danny!

Hi Lisa,

Glad you enjoyed - maybe that;ll keep the ogre that is Gini off your back for a while? ;-)

I tend to go with a quick one-line: "This is a guest post by [NAME]." Then lead into the post properly, and finish with the bio.

You might take a small hit on SEO, but it's a fair trade for having a guest author write for you. :)

That was excellent Danny! One area that I really need to step up is in the realm of SEO. I've learned a little here and there, but with so much information available, and much of it conflicting, it's difficult to narrow down the good from the bad.

I trust what you share, so this helps me out a lot!

Thanks for the inside info!

PS - Was out last week on a biz trip...but back to the grind!

Have a great week!

Danny

Hey there Jk,

The funny thing is, the simpler you keep the approach to SEO, the more effective it can be. Then again isn't that always the way for most things..? ;-)

Hope you had a good trip, sir! :)

Danny,
Great video! I've been using a plugin for SEO (Scribe SEO) and have found that it has really helped me hone in on optimizing what I've written. Still, though, so many great tips you have shared here today that will help me take this even further! In fact, one thing I had never considered were the headings I have, and how they might affect SEO.

Danny
Danny

Hey there Lance,

Great to hear, mate. I know Gini uses the Scribe plug-in too (I checked it out a little while back), and it's definitely helpful.

The one area I found it "lacking" was with regards the long-tail keyword suggestions. But, like I say, it was a while ago I checked it out, so that may have changed since then?

Danny, aloha. Thx so much. This was so helpful and easy to understand as you walked us through on the dashboard.

What you said about how to use "Yelp for Business" makes so much sense. Because of your answer to Gini's question I will make such better use of keywords and long tail key words.

Best wishes for a most excellent week. Mahalo and aloha. Janet

PS - sent you an email over the weekend, hope it helps. :)

Danny, Thank you for this post! It was great to see, we've been looking for this kinda of help for Develop Socially.

We kinda found something by accent a few week ago when we used 3 key words and names it "Best Practices". Now I see why it was better found and better read!

Thanks again. Cheers!

Glad the post was useful, and here's to more "Best Practices" in your upcoming posts. :)

Hi Danny, I find myself using way too many tags on blog posts too so I can relate to your advice here. I have a sidebar question I noticed the PostRank plugin is installed on Gini's blog. I used to have this plugin installed but I got rid of it because I don't think it adds enough value to me or my readers - and since I was eliminating plugins at the time it got chopped. What do you think about it?

Danny
Danny

Hi Ileane,

I agree - I use PostRank but it's more from an analytics angle (I mix up its data with Google, Quantcast and Lijit to get a good overview of people's behaviours here).

The post plug-in is fun, but I'd rather have a Related Posts or Popular Posts option, and leave PostRank for the analytical side. :)

Danny, that's fantastic information and quite useful tools that I'm off to start using. Google now surpasses Twitter for my traffic, but not because I've strategically tried. Dumb luck, more likely. Who knows how strong it will be now that I've got some actual tools! :) Happy Sunday, Danny! Thanks as always for sharing your knowledge!

Hey there Erica,

Hey, you might have been really scientific - who knows, Google changes their algorithm that often, maybe you were ahead of them!! ;-)

Glad the post was useful, miss, cheers! :)
