The Could and Need Effect

There are two basic ways of deciding on a course of action – the Could and Need Effect.

Both similar. Both different. Both entwined. Both separate. But each one defines your success and longevity.

Ask yourself a question and approach it from Could and Need to decide your next step.

This bill could wait until next week. I need to pay this bill to keep my business open.

We could make a change in design if necessary. We need to start from scratch.

This could help our strategy. This needs to be in place for any of our strategy to work.

Similar paths, but very different forks in the road at the key junction.

So. Could you, or do you need to?

Great idea. I could redo my opt - in, I could add a banner at the top, I could spend more time building up Facebook fan page, I could get a logo designed, I could enrol into high end blogging courses, I could pay for an expensive blog critiqiue, could spend more time on twitter and other social media, could form 'meaningful' relationships with high influencers. I choose instead to read, learn, write, educate, entertain and engage with my readers, and other bloggers I like. :) AWESOME POST. This one is going in as an entry in my dairy. Many thanks.

Great technique! It is quite an effective way to muster up energy to actually do something about it, rather than wait for another day to hypothesize.

Short crisp and provocative…… well said Danny It is about how we interpret the situation. If we misinterpret as could for need, then it might lead to disaster. It is also about doing right things at the right time.

I am not a fan of need or should because it ends up making whatever the task is seem like a burden. I like "want to" and "get to".

Actually @DannyBrown in its brevity, this is a profound post. ( I know...dramatic, right?!?) But it speaks to all aspects of our life...not just our businesses. What "could" we do to create change and what do we "need" to do to create change? My conversations with myself are always so much easier when I am in the "could" conversation. But, I am never challenged, stimulated or motivated like I am when I force myself to take the hard conversation about "need". This post brought to mind a great movie from 1998 with Gwyneth Paltrow called Sliding Doors that viewed her in parallel lives that were determined by one simple change...getting on a subway train or missing that subway train. She "could" have gotten the train but missed it or she "needed" to catch that train and got it....and how different her parallel lives were. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDqdB-JegLM Compelling post, Danny. @DannyBrown I think we need an infographic here - I keep thinking of new angles on this. We need to vs. we could, you covered above. Then there's the "should we" test (prevents unethical behavior that can kill your business). But let's not forget the "why would we" test as in "we could make an infographic, but why would we waste anyone's time." Another important consideration since it prevents inefficient behavior and time-wasting (you know, like excessive commenting) ... :-)
