You Make The Choices

149 Shares 149 Shares ×

Meh to social media complainers

There’s a lot of hand-wringing and woe is me in social media.

At times, it’s like watching a therapy group from the sidelines, except the therapy group shouldn’t really be called that – it’s more like a “woe is me, how unfair this social media thing is to me” group.

Thing is, it’s not. When something’s unfair, or annoying, or any other emotion that doesn’t fill you with unicorn-flavoured Kool Aid, much of it can be attributed back to the person doing the hand-wringing.

For example, making a public song and dance about unfollowing everyone on Twitter because of all the spam you get in your Direct Message box. Hint – maybe following over 130,000 people in the first place had something to do with it.

But seriously?

Are we really missing the point that, in social especially, we make all the choices that come back and upset the apple cart later on?

No, we don’t deliberately ask for spam – but every single person we take “onboard” has the potential to be a spammer. So, it makes sense that the more we connect, the more the potential.

There are also options available for countering spam.

For example, I’ve seen Twitter profiles that clearly state, “I don’t answer DM’s anymore, but feel free to @ me or email me instead.” Then simply adjust your email settings to stop DM alerts coming into your email Inbox.

Or – less ideally – set your Twitter profile to private. That way only the chosen few will be able to DM you, and you can soon see who the spammers are that way.

Or, simply click Delete and Report Spam – Hootsuite is great for this approach.

Note – all of the above options also mean you don’t flaunt Twitter’s Terms of Service by running a script to mass unfollow.

But the same goes for offline.

We see ads on TV that we don’t want to see. We hear radio ads we don’t care about. We receive flyers in the mail that we have no interest in. But instead of telling all our friends about it, we just change channel or throw in the bin and move on. No big deal.

The point is, all of this is our choice to make. We can all follow hundreds of thousands of people and deal with the inevitable bad eggs; or we follow less and be less visible.

We can’t have it both ways, as much as we’d like to think we can.

Thanks for highlighting this point: it is our choice! Agreed on if you follow 130K on twitter you are likely to get spammed.I am still small potatoes so like watching this all from the sidelines. But good to know once I am a BIG FISH, lol! Cheers,Rajka

@margieclayman I remember when Seth Simonds did it a couple of years back; and Ari Herzog last year (2-3 times, I think) and I said the same thing then as I say in the post - switch off (which is what you say here, miss). Sure, spam is a pain. But you're not the only person being spammed. Difference is, others are just getting on with it... I'll follow @meh if you go there. ;-)

As I mentioned over on Chris's post, it seems like a lot of people with big followings have done the "I just unfollowed everyone" post. When Shama did it last year I wrote a post about it.

I would say two things. And in fact, I am gonna!

1. A lot of people complain about the noise on Twitter. This really doesn't bother me. For whatever reason, I fell into a good methodology (for me) from the start - I checked my responses page first, then went into the stream to see what was going on. In the beginning, my responses page was very very sad because cool cats like you weren't talking to me yet. There were cobwebs on that thing. So I'd dash through my 67 followers to see what they were up to. Now, I still check my responses first, and I very seldom go into the home stream. It's responses and hashtags. I guess you could say it's my version of headphones. I filter in what I want without ruffling too many feathers (I think).

2. The problem with Twitter right now is that people can spam you even if you aren't following them. I follow people manually still, one-by-one, and I get plenty of DM spam from people who I don't follow. It just means I can't reply back, which is probably lucky for them. Do you WANT to see a picture of me you'd regret seeing? Cuz I can hook you UP, yo! ehem. Anyway...

As I mentioned on aforementioned post, to me the best radical idea would just be to say, "I'm not checking my DMs anymore and I'm telling my email account to filter out any emails that are from Twitter. KThxBai."

Or I could just say "Meh." I like that word. Using it a lot these days. Might change my Twitter handle. Easier to retweet me that way. Considering...

@Mark Longbottom@LucretiaPruitt@Sydney Additionally, though, I think that post (or one that followed) mentioned that he also then went back in and manually unfollowed the bots and spammers. So something doesn't add up - why use auto-follow if you're just going to go in and clean afterwards? ;-)

@Mark Longbottom I honestly don't understand why it should be difficult. If I feel some sort of remorse for unfollowing someone, that usually means we've established a relationship and I'll be missed. If I don't have that basis of a relationship, unfollowing or following really won't matter to that person. They're after numbers, not quality at that point. @3HatsComm

@DannyBrown@bdorman264 That makes this as good a place as any for my comment, since @EricaAllison dragged me here. IDK I don't have the 'nice problem to have' of big numbers so not sure what I'd do. If I thought anyone was paying attention, I probably would give a head's up if I decided to shut down my blog, revamp Twitter. I don't obsess but have a quasi-selective Twitter policy to block spammers, find those who know the secret to winning the lottery, etc. I have a few surprise non-followers: I've read their blogs, RT posts and tweets, they've RT mine, we've had conversations. Yet they don't follow me. Maybe they think they already are, or think I'm a moron (let's not rule it out); maybe I don't tweet enough about bacon or they're intimidated by my "Geaux Tigers" tweets. Either way, it's their call and I'm not gonna tax my delicate baby feelings worrying about it. You know, any more than I already do. ;-) FWIW

@EricaAllison Not sure about bane, but spammy Auto-DMs certainly make my 'what NOT to do' list. :-) As does whining about what we can't control. See also, bitching about when someone's fabulous, FREE Interweb service is down. *eyeroll*

Freedom of choice is a powerful thing. Choose to follow. Choose to not. Choose to hire me. Or not. But let's not make a public display out of it. If automated DMs are the bane of existence for @3hatscomm the public announcement that you're about to "cull your followers" is mine. Are these folks hoping that we'll all jump up and say, please, please keep me, keep me!!! Hands raised, jumping up in the air. I'm sorry; I'm just not that into you.

@LucretiaPruitt@Sydney@chrisbrogan on the topic of being fair to....Why does anyone use Auto Follow, as you point out the person involved getting 1000's of followers a day will never be able to monitor or vet them and so those followers would probablty understand not being followed. As they are there to learn from someone elses knowledge and experiences.Auto anything for me is creaping back to broadcasting and not two way communicating and sharing. As Danny says we all have choices and we can all work out a schedule to make those choices effective and relevant to our needs.

@Sydney @ Social Dynamics to be fair to @chrisbrogan on this though - he wrote a post awhile back on why he used auto follow and it had to do with time. If I recall correctly, he was getting about 300 followers per day. If he took one minute for each one of those to click thru and see if that person was worth the follow and then click follow? That makes for about 5 hours a day *just* vetting followers. Which is ridiculous.

Hear hear! I think the best course of action is when you do see someone who's a legit spammer, just unfollow and be done with it. Instead of complaining, do something about your privacy controls and check before adding anyone to your roster.

@DannyBrown@FrankDickinson Look at this, our engineers are beating me to the blog! Oh and I had to look up "grog" in Wikipedia. Not for me this weekend, just enjoying the weather during the day then jumping online to see the tweets. Luckily @teo is here checking in as well when he takes a break from coding and making sure Livefyre is running smoothly. That's why we love our team! We have some adjustments to make to LinkBack to have it ignore images - the reason it came on here is because comments are turned on for attachments, so a Livefyre conversation is created. We're looking into a fix for this, but for now that's a pretty awesome image :)

Seems you ahve also covered a quote here from Seth Godin who i think said something on the lines 'If you're not getting people annoyed what's the point?'I kow peobably not the actual quote but you get the idea, best to be real and not collect adn believe in your own hype remember the 1990's BBC TV series Absolutely Fabulous? There's a lot in that reflected in media people today too. Be real accept what's out there and work on who and what you neeed to talk about, if it's worth it the followers will come. You know that though.
