Why Your Strength Within Lies Without

Strength within

“Most people think they know what they are good at. They are usually wrong… And yet, a person can perform only from strength.” Peter Drucker.

None of us like to admit we’re weak. None of us like to present the potential of fear to our opponents, always waiting in the wings for us to slip up.

And yet… Our opponents are just as fearful. Just as cautious. Just as secretive and unwilling to admit to weaknesses too. Sometimes they hide it better; sometimes not.

But why fear weakness? Is it really weakness anyway? Look at it from another angle – our admitted weakness allows us to set up strong pillars around us that provide the strength we’re missing.

When I look at any successes I’ve had, it’s always been because of outside strengths as well as anything I’ve brought to the table.

One is Just Two Letters Away from Alone

At work, I have the immense good fortune to be partnered with some of the smartest people and minds I know, with a team that’s driven to change the way we do social commerce in the months to come.

In my personal life, although we’ve had our struggles like any couple (married or otherwise), I have a rock in my wife who supports me in all I do, or try to do.

In projects like For Bloggers by Bloggers, I know I have certain strengths in blogging. But I also know that I have limited knowledge in many areas – that’s where the strengths of some amazingly smart people cover my weakness.

When I started 12for12k back at the end of 2008, I had a ton of great ideas. But that’s all they were. It took people like Jon, Sue, Cheryl, Darin, John, Rachel and many others to make it happen. And it took people like you to continue making it happen, even at times when I questioned if it still could.

I could go on, but it all boils down to the same thing – all our strength within lies without.

And sometimes we miss that because we fear the repercussions of weakness.

Unfostering the Weakness

But weakness in ourselves isn’t a bad thing.

We’re told it is – by teachers, by lovers, by bosses.

But instead of highlighting our weakness and where we can improve, they should be concentrating on our strengths and where we can use them.

We should be concentrating on our strengths and allowing others in to be the blankets for our supposed failings. Because, in all honesty, our only failing or weakness is in allowing others to foster it.

Open up your weakness; acknowledge your strength.

You might be surprised at the results.

G'Day Danny,

I'm a weak, self indulgent,  Aussie curmudgeon. So I can't resist this.

@Leon Haha, and this is why I love it when you come over here, sir - you never fail to make me smile, no matter how the day is going.   Cheers, mate!

Danny Boy: I just got to read this and I'm glad I saved it for this day. On Mondays I think a lot of us are overwhelmed and feeling inadequate.  Leaning on 'our team,' whether that be our business or real family, is essential.  Thanks.

 @AmyMccTobin Hey there Amy,

Oh, I hate Mondays - purely from the fact that it's time to put my little guy back into daycare, and I don't get the day with him. :)

Thankfully I have great colleagues to "lean on" to get me through to family time again. And that's all you can ask for.

Cheers, miss!

@DannyBrown DITTO on the daycare.  Saturday is Mommy & Addie Day at our house. Sunday is family day. Monday is 'sigh-h-h-h" day.

Really enjoyed the post as you hit a point that I think we all grapple with from time to time.

And, I think recognition of the fact as you imply is 9/10th of the battle. Humility is akin to vulnerability and is very powerful when we choose to let it be.

Thank you for the 'real' reminder.

Have a smashing weekend.

 @mbrewer Hey there Mike,

Completely agree, mate - it's where a lot of folks screw up, forgetting who helped get them where they are. Because, yes, you just enjoyed that success right out the gate... ;-)

Wait, back to Livefyre again?  When did this happen, last I checked you were using CommentLuv again.  Also love the image for the post too, draws your attention and conveys the strength and power we all wield within ourselves.  Good message.

@Dragon Blogger Hi Ric, Yep, I split-tested with CommentLuv Premium, and found that I was still getting more engagement and interaction around the Livefyre plugin.  Besides, I missed these guys. ;-)

Thanks Danny! I draw strength from this post because I realize that exposing my weakness allows me to recognize my opportunities and acknowledge that I am human, and always learning. I don't expect to be perfect and I don't profess to know everything -- I draw comfort in knowing that I, too am surrounded by some of the most clever minds who thrive on their own passions, as I do.

I will go to bed happy tonight:)

@hessiej

You know, that's a good point about being human. It's what separates us from inanimate objects, and makes us who we are and all we can offer because of it.

Although it'd be cool to be R2-D2 for the day... ;-)

Sorry to hear about your day (and week!), miss - hopefully the weekend will bring much better times. And maybe even a glass or two of wine to help it along... ;-)

@DannyBrown Yeah ... just one of those weeks BUT it is FRIDAY so it can only get better!

BTW - I'm more of a beer kinda gal, the kind that comes in a pint glass and is usually has a British, Irish or Scottish name to it. So give me a good pint and a couple hours on Pinterest and the world gets better :)

Hi Danny, I love being part of the team at FBBB, we all learn so much from each other. It's a terrific experience and I thank you from the heart for sharing that experience with me.

I am blessed with truly tremendous friends, business partner and a partner that supports me.

It's easy to imagine that we can do things on our own, when we get over that we realise that we are stronger and greater for working together.

PS is that Wesley Snipes in the pic? (I need to know so I can tag it to the correct board ;))

Hey there miss,

I have to say, the FBBB project is one of the most enjoyable I've been part of. From the author team to the smart and engaged readers and all our awesome contributors, it really is a pleasure to "work" there. Here's to more years of it!

Not sure about the pic, just know that it's a promo shot for the movie Troy, not even sure if it's of an actor from it - sorry!

Hi Danny,

Very nice post, Sir.

Like you, I have a rock in my wife. I'm not sure why, but she never questions what I do, and also supports and encourages. She's very smart too, but pretends she's not. ;)

Wise words. It took me many years to just accept the things I'm not good at and rely on the brilliance of others, in business and in life.

Danny, it seems like you are always highlighting other people here, which is so great! In my short stint online I've learned from many, including you. You've been quite generous and your brain is always available for pickin' :)

@Craig McBreen Hey there mate, It's funny how the so-called "weaker sex" is often the strongest, as they look out for us as well as keep themselves going, eh? Something we can learn from, methinks. ;-)

I've always thought that the main goal at school should not be providing us with some notions which we could probably learn in a third of the time used but to test us to discover both our strenghts and weeknesses so that we could have a solid foundation to build upon our life. Because most of the times with age we learn what our weeknesses are but never discover all our strengths.

Example: at school I was one of, if not the, most scared guy with talking in class, especially at the beginning of the year when you get to present yourself. Blocked tongue and red cheeks. And it went this way until some years ago. Comfortable with others but always scared of the public. I knew that this was a serious weakness but then one day I decided to take a public speaking course and imagine what happened? I'm pretty good at it.

If this weakness transformed in strength was to be discovered while at school I could have saved a lot of stress and performed better in life in various occasions.

Final point: we all have both weaknesses and strenghts because that's what makes us humans, sometimes what we percaive as a weakness turns itself in a strength, knowing as soon as possible both we can start building our life as we want it. Also focusing onour strengths sometimes our weaknesses improve too.

Sorry, I thought I go long-winded only at Marcus' place. :)

@Andrea Hypno Awesome comment, Andrea, and so many great points!

It's true - school has so much power to shape who we become as young adults, and yet school also knocks the creativity and ambition out of so many, by telling us things aren't realistic.

Maybe, like you say, if they straddled both sides of the strength coin, everyone would be better all round. We can but hope.

Hey Danny - thanks for the shout out. I am proud to be part of such an amazing team, and feel very fortunate that I am able to learn and grow within a team headed by you and @hessiejones - the sky's the limit when you're part of a great group of people that you know you can rely on, and all the pieces just click.

Great post, and looking forward to the future at Jugnoo!
