You Don’t Have to Be Epic Every Time

80 Shares 80 Shares ×

For the last two days, I’ve been sitting at my computer itching to write something epic. Looking at the blank screen, thinking of words I can write to convey the feeling I have inside that I need to share something epic and life-changing.

And I come up blank.

I have an inkling of what I’m about to say, and then I ask myself how it will end. How the words that precede the final sentence will be strong enough to hook the reader to guide them to the last sentence that will, undoubtedly, change their lives.

And I come up blank.

I imagine the story I’ll tell to convey a lesson, personal or business. I imagine the memories I’ll revisit to open up demons, to help others fight their own and make it to the other side. I imagine the emotion I’ll invoke to make readers think this is one of the most amazing blog posts they’ve ever read, and ever will.

And I come up blank.

And that’s okay – because we’re only fooling ourselves that everything needs to be epic.

Everything we put out for others to consume is already epic, because we’re opening ourselves up to critique, belittlement, and crushing disappointment if others don’t like it.

And we continue to do so, even when harsh voices tell us not to – because all we really need is our own validation that we did the best we could, every time we hit Publish.

So embrace the blank screen. Embrace the empty mind. Embrace the still keyboard. Because sooner or later, the next epic chapter of that which is uniquely you will be live for everyone to see.

And that, my friends, is truly epic.

Hey Danny,

I needed to hear this, because I'll be honest, it is something I struggle with. I sometimes fine-tune a blog post to death, and then I remember ... ah, it's just a blog post, which has the staying power of what? One week max?

The posts I've written which I honestly thought were, well ... kinda, sorta good, well there's a trend with those pieces: Those are the posts that invariably get the lowest number of comments and mentions. Must tell you something about my taste, huh? ;)

Now I'd say I'm more concerned with posting twice a week and keeping up the pace.

You know what, mate - I think that must be something true in many bloggers. In the early days, we try so damn hard to write that piece that will get hundreds of comments and social shares that we forget what it is that made us start blogging in the first place - our hopes, dreams and passions shared with those that might find a kindred spirit.

Here's to ignoring that early rush for social proof, and more power to he or she that just writes for the sheer love of it. :)

So well stated and what I needed to hear! And cheers to writing just for the sheer love of it!

Great post. And I think this is something that anyone in any creative field can and should take to heart. I think about the same thing sometimes in terms of music. Pop music is often put down because it can be simple and "low brow." But sometimes, that's what you want. And if it's still executed well - then it's still a good song.

If you think of the early Beatles, their riffs were pretty much all built around the same basic three chords. And yet they're rightly celebrated as having changed the face of modern music. Something to be said about the simple things. :)

I find this to be an interesting thought because nowadays we put pressure on our everyday lives to be epic. Be it how we dress, how we do our hair, who we talk to, our jobs, our homes, our families, what we post on facebook, what picture we put on instagram, what we blog... Everything. We put too much pressure on ourselves to be the best of the best, to be epic, to get the most likes, comments, etc. Imagine a day in which we didn't have to worry about any of that. A day in which we just were. Just a blank screen of ourselves, epic-less and happy.

Danny Brown

"What picture we put on Instagram..." HA! And that's the crux of the problem right there, Paige - if we're worrying about how awesome our images are on an app that makes them look crap anyhoo, what hope do we really have?

Here's to your vision of a blank screen of ourselves - I can live with that, for sure. Thanks for your thoughts, miss.

Funny that you don't think it's an epic post, Danny. It spoke so loudly to me - I'm calling it epic alright! Thanks for saying this. I wonder why we put so much pressure on ourselves. Just who do we think we are? ;)

Hey there Corinne,

Didn't you know - unless your post is at least 1500 words and offers 6 undeniable life lessons attached to business, it's not epic? ;-)

Thanks for being here, miss, appreciated.

Danny. Love your blog and input..will certainly be coming back. I work in the distance running niche and am building a community of beginner to advanced level runners on my blog at www.rundreamachieve.com. You can't write epic s*** all of the time but poor input to us may be a wealth of knowledge to someone else. Happy Holidays.

We're already epic just providing our content. Sometimes we just come up because our brains are tired and need a rest that's normal. Thanks for a great post Danny.

G'Day Danny,

You don't have to be epic every time

Nor awesome nor sick nor cool

You just have to write good readable stuff

That makes your competitors drool.

'Avagrade Christmas

Best Wishes

Leon

What can be better at Christmas than an Aussie with a poem? Nothing, that's what! Cheers, mate - hope you and yours have a wonderful Christmas!

Danny,

When Corbett wrote, "Write Epic Shit" he didn't say write epic shit every time. That's impossible...

Every story can't be George RR Marin's Song of Fire and Ice (known as A Game of Thrones on HBO, though the books are so High Fantasy Gangster even with the TV show being the great that don't do the books justice, amazing character develop. I've also never known an author so willing to kill-off would be crucial characters... but I digress)

The crucial item here, that you highlighted above is that genius came come without warning which also means it can be taken away. A muse is a fickle creature.

...and sometimes the failing, the blank screen, can be as powerful as the crowded essay.

All the best and Happy Holidays!!!

Ryan,

Now I want to read "A Song of Fire and Ice," 'cause I just blasted through season I of Game of Thrones ... that was Epic :)

Craig,

If you think the TV show is good the books will blow your mind. Its the best High Fantasy series EVER... and I've read the Black Caldron and I've read Tolkien and Dune and many others... Jon Snow 2016.

Hey there mate, completely agree. Often I find it's what's unsaid that leaves the biggest impression. Funny how that works. :)

Here's to you and yours this Christmas!

Excellent reminder that there is more to life sometimes.

Why are so many people bothered about being epic, becasue they think they fill a gap? Instead follow Dr Seuss and simply be you nobody can do it better and sod the rest who need to be patted on the back for living.

We're at a time of year when someone in a household takes on so much work it would make most business people walk out, i know my partner is doing so much she's nearly burst and the rest of the world is full of similar people. We do what we do because we care and if it's not epic enough so be it.

The really epic stuff is the small stuff and Danny you surely know you never have to try. Wisdom is often mixed up by some people, most miss out how it's just common sense and logic.

You'll carry on being you, true star whether a blank screen or not - so glad to know you.

You know, I blame the shills that preach not to say anything unless it's awesome and you have something worth saying. How can they know what awesome is to everyone? We all define greatness by different yardsticks - don't try and say otherwise. Ah well, to each their own.

Merry Christmas, sir!

Hi Danny

"So embrace the blank screen. Embrace the empty mind. Embrace the still keyboard."

I do that more than most, but that is one good point and so well made.

I'll raise a glass to you during the festivities.

I liked the post, epic or not.

Tonight, I got a notice from Feedblitz that I had l lost a subscriber. I only have 18, so it was sort of a big deal. Then I saw who it was and I was sad. You see, the person had just started to follow my blog a week before. I guess she got tired of a blog that is just one chapter after another of my new novel. That wasn't the bad part, though.

I'm sure there are a lot of people who wouldn't care for "Touched" or want to read it as it's being written. I wasn't hurt at all by her disinterest. I was saddened by the fact that the woman, who I remember as the girl I had a crush on in 4th grade, had left.

Oh well...but I do wonder if maybe I should have been a little more epic.

Danny Brown
Danny Brown

Feedblitz is evil that way, isn't it? The fact is asks a reason for the unsubscription, and the reply is "Content no longer relevant". BAAAHHH!!! ;-)

I feel for you, mate - there's nothing worse than a crush leaving you in the lurch a second time. Oh, wait, that's not going to do any good... ignore that previous sentence!

Which reminds me, I need to catch up on three posts of yours - my mission for the rest of 2012. Have a great Christmas, sir!

Are you really reading along with "Touched"? I hope you are enjoying, even with the flaws of being a first draft. It is fun to write a novel while people watch.

don't worry @twitter-103512565:disqus i only subscribe to @dannybrown:disqus because he gives me a canadian quarter for each email I open and read and 10 cents for every comment. I have only 4 subscribers and have no idea who they are. I just create epic blog post after blog post so I can read them at night and be all smug with myself.
