The 12 for 12,000 Challenge 2009: 12 months, 12 charities, $12,000 each charity.

Change and Persistent Vision

cricket lover“The lesson is that one person with a persistent vision can make change happen, whether climbing rocks or delivering services.” Seth Godin, Tribes.

That sentence relates to a passage in Seth’s book where he talks about Chris Sharma and how he changed the way rock climbers looked at scaling a cliff. Instead of the normal left/right/, left/right approach of hand over hand, Sharma jumps (known as a dyno).

It’s a leap of faith at its purest, since a fall while rock-climbing can be a long way down.

Seth’s analogy is that because of Sharma’s vision that the status quo needn’t be the norm, and his persistence in experimenting with how far you could push the limitations of the dyno, things changed. Other climbers experimented, and soon the dyno wasn’t the exception anymore. It may not be the rule, but it’s not the exception.

Finding Your Dyno

Persistent vision is difficult. Persistence in itself is tough. Much like a rock climber, you need stamina. Stamina to see something through; to reach the endgame. Like rocks that jut out, obstacles will stand in your way. And the more persistent your vision, the more frequent and tougher the obstacles will be.

But that’s why it’s called persistence. That’s why you need to reach out and find your dyno and push it to its limits. That’s why you need to take your leap of faith and trust in the safety of your landing.

Change doesn’t happen overnight but it does happen.

The Story of Persistent Vision

At the tale end of 2008, I had a vision. It was maybe a little ambitious and perhaps just a little crazy. But it was something I knew could work, and believed in 100%. And when I believe in something, I’m persistent to the end.

I didn’t know if my vision would work. I didn’t know if people would share it, or whether I’d be the lonely guy with a plan and a road map that no-one wanted to read. Thankfully, though, people did. Then more people. And when obstacles got in the way, the persistence that had started in me had also started in others, and they barged their way through the obstacles.

They jumped their dynos.

Just over 12 months later, a group of persistent people with a shared vision had raised over $90,000 for charity and set out their stalls for future dynos to come.

Endgame and Beginnings

This isn’t a story about ego. This is simply a story about how you have the same persistence in you too. How you have the same visions for what matters to you. How you can find your dyno and leapfrog it every single time.

Afraid to start blogging? Write the first word then leave it. Then go back and write another. Then leave it. Go back. Leave. Persist. Jump your dyno – the blog will happen.

Afraid to start your own business? Buy the first product. Store it. Buy another. Store it. Scour the classifieds. Buy another product. Find the audience, write a short advert (could be that first blog post). Persist. Build slowly. Let your stamina feed your persistence and jump your dyno.

The point is, change is waiting for you. Persistence doesn’t mean overnight. Change doesn’t happen overnight. But it does happen.

Ready to jump your dyno?

Help 12for12k Support Hope for Haiti

This is a cross-post from 12for12k, following the humanitarian disaster currently happening in Haiti.

I don’t think I need to explain the human disaster that’s unfolding in Haiti. An earthquake of devastating proportions has ripped the heart out of the country, leaving a trail of death and destruction in its wake.

There are fears that there could be more than 100,000 fatalities and countless more injured and missing. This is the immediate impact. Long-term there is the threat of disease, illness, malnutrition, and much, much more. 12for12k is asking for your support to help the people of Haiti.

We are partnering with Hope for Haiti to raise much-needed donations to send to this humanitarian emergency. The immediate funds will go to helping the survivors with aid, shelter, food, medication and other essentials. Then there is the long-term need from there.

I know this is just after the holiday season. I know this is coming off the back of a year when people suffered financial strain. Yet we showed last year how much the 12for12k community cares, and the change we can make in whatever way we can. Please help us help Hope for Haiti and show our continued caring. You can use the donation widget below, which uses Paypal and goes directly to Hope for Haiti itself. $0.95 of every dollar goes to the humanitarian program needs.

Thank you, and let’s make whatever difference we can. And please, tweet this on Twitter, share on Facebook/display as your status, email folks to come here – we can really help together. You can also copy the embed code and display the widget on your own blog/site to spread awareness.

You can read Hope for Haiti’s press release about their aid program here. Additionally, you can follow their progress in Haiti via the Hope For Haiti Twitter account.

12 Days, 12 Ways to Help the Homeless

This is a cross-post from 12for12k.

Today sees the launch of the 12 Days of Christmas Homeless Push. As we’ve mentioned in the run-up, this isn’t about cash donations this month (although if you wish to donate money to your local homeless shelter or organization, please do).

Instead, 12for12k wants you to think of ways that you can physically help. To this end, and with the help of Mark Horvath and various homeless organizations, we’ve come up with these 12 suggestions for you. Themed around the 12 Days of Christmas, this is the 12for12k version – the 12 Days of Christmas Homeless Push.

It’s up to you which ones you choose, although obviously choosing all 12 will make the biggest impact. And whatever you decide to do, record it. Photographs, videos, blogs, social networks – your choice. Sharing can only make more people aware, and encourage more help – and that’s always a good thing. And 12for12k will share your stories on our community, so please consider joining if you haven’t already.

So… on with the 12 suggestions.

  1. Day 1. Contact your local homeless shelter(s) and ask what they need. Make a list and work from there.
  2. Day 2. Gather 10 friends each (family, friends, colleagues) in preparation for Helping Day.
  3. Day 3. Challenge these friends to a bake-off. Bake a bunch of homemade goodness – soup, stews, cookies, etc – ready for Helping Day.
  4. Day 4. Clean out your closet (especially your husband’s, 12for12k wives!), and pack up all the old clothes that you find. Coats, socks, underwear, shoes, jeans – anything and everything.
  5. Day 5. Go through your linen closet and think of what blankets, sleeping bags, duvets, etc, that you no longer need.
  6. Day 6. Check your pantry – do you really need all these tins of soup or canned stew? Collect and store.
  7. Day 7. Invite a homeless person for coffee. Go to a Starbucks or McDonald’s, buy a combo, sit and talk. Get to know the person behind the story.
  8. Day 8. Go grocery shopping. Find 2-for-1 deals and buy what you can afford. Save the second item for Helping Day.
  9. Day 9. Kids are homeless too. Collect all your childrens’ unwanted toys and box up. This includes books as well.
  10. Day 10. Go to your local fast food/coffee house and buy a bunch of gift cards ready for handing out.
  11. Day 11. This one’s an easy one – share with your networks what’s happening and get them involved.
  12. Day 12. This is Helping Day. Go to a shelter, take everything you and your friends/family have collected, and help. One hour; six hours; all day – it doesn’t matter. Help – serve food; give out packages; talk to people; befriend someone. Simply put – be human to another human being.

This isn’t an exhaustive list; it’s simply suggestions. Please, feel free to leave other suggestions in the comments, or join our community and let us know what you’re doing. And make sure you follow 12for12k on Twitter for all the latest updates on what everyone is doing.

Christmas is a time for giving; let’s give to those that need it the most. Thank you.

The 12 Days of Christmas Homeless Push

This is a cross-posting from the 12for12k blog. Throughout December, the 12for12k focus is on the homeless and how you can help in your own towns and cities.

There’s no donation widget this month – we’re offering a more hands-on challenge. By all means, if you wish to donate cash as well as the time and items we’ll be suggesting, that’d be great as well. So, with that said, let’s get into our streets this month and really help those that need it the most.

Thank you.

Do Good, Look Good

As you may know, I’m part of the 12for12k social media-led charity initiative that supports a different charity each month throughout 2009.

October’s chosen charity is Musicians on Call, an amazing group of folks that take the healing power of music to bed-ridden hospital patients. They currently operate in four cities across the U.S. and amazingly a whole program can be operated for one year with just $10,000.

Tonight sees a live concert take place to help raise funds and awareness for MoC and arranged by fellow 12for12k supporter Richard Marti. This is at the Rock Cafe and Smokin’ Rock Restaurant in Rocky Hill, CT, with a great line-up of artists and original music – more details are here and it promises to be a great night.

Sadly, October has been really quiet as far as donations go. Awareness has been awesome, and thank you so much for that, but it’d be great to help out more from a fund-raising front. So, here’s a special offer/challenge and every donor is eligible.

If we can break the $10,000 mark between now and midnight PST on October 31 that will enable a full one-year support program, I will offer the following to one lucky name drawn after the event:

  • Copy of the Headway premium WordPress theme
  • A domain name
  • A two-year web host package with Bluehost
  • Website or blog set-up with up to five pages of design
  • Two hours of consultancy time and a checklist report for maximizing your website or blog presence

Combined, this is worth over $2,000 and is a great way to kick-start your online presence if, a) you don’t already have one or, b) you need to boost yours.

So, what do you say guys – ready to either donate or share via Twitter, Facebook, friends and colleagues and help 12for12k and Musicians on Call crack that magic $10k mark?
