12for12k Challenge

A Charitable Social Media Mission for 2011

Charities and social media

Charities and social media

This post wasn’t meant to be here – it sprung from a thought I had, which I then posted as a status on my Facebook page. Here’s the thought:

Wouldn’t it be cool if big corporations that supported charities took an allocation of their donation, and paid for consultants to help non-profits learn about social media? The consultants don’t have to charge the charity, the corporation is still helping the charity, and the charity can allocate these funds back into the organization and those who need it the most. Just a thought…

From that simple thought, I got a ton of feedback and stories.

Helping charities

From the conversations with Abbie, Shana, Catherine and Kimberly, it’s clear there continues to be a huge need for social media within the non-profit sector.

Not only can it help reduce costs from an advertising standpoint, but (as we discovered with the 12for12k project), it can help raise awareness and reach like no other medium.

The problem is, too many charities can’t afford the extra cost of hiring a consultant or agency to train them on how to use social media to its fullest.

On the flip side, people that offer their time pro-bono to try and help educate non-profits often find they can’t continue to allocate free time and still work their own job to pay the bills. Sadly, this leads to them giving up, and the charity is back to square one.

So. Here’s a challenge for 2011. A mission statement, if you like.

Let’s build a database of social media consultants and agencies, either with expertise in the non-profit sector or working with clients that donates funds to non-profits, and look at how we can use their skills.

Let’s add companies and corporations to that database that are willing to fund social media education for their chosen charity, or ones that we can help suggest and connect.

Let’s find and add quality, creative agencies that understand the power of storytelling and want to make a change, and can bring amazing visuals to a charity’s words.

Simply put, let’s make it a mission to connect people who can help each other – consultant-to-business-to-charity-to-consultant.

Along with my business partner Troy Claus, I’ll be speaking with a bunch of folks over the next couple of weeks as we put in place some of the stuff we’ll be doing with 12for12k next year as it returns from its sabbatical.

I’m now making this mission one of the key goals for 12for12k next year.

I’m pretty sure we can find enough willing parties from all aspects of this mission to make a good start on the database and how it’ll work. Then the real fun can begin.

Interested?

Leave your details in the form below (it’s just for letting you know when the database is up, as well as ideas along the way – no spamming, I promise!) and let’s see what magic we can create next year.

Thanks!

A Birthday Request

Stacey Monk

Stacey Monk of Epic ChangeSo today’s post was going to be a look back at two years of blogging here, and some of the things that have happened since I made this my main blog on September 30 2008.

Then I read a blog post from a dear friend that stopped me in my tracks.

And completely changed what this post would be.

Stacey Monk is a girl in Florida who co-founded the Epic Change charity program with another mutual friend, Sanjay Patel. Epic Change is the parent organization behind the annual Tweetsgiving charity project in November.

The post in question is a deeply personal one, and reflects on Stacey’s current outlook on life.

It’s clear it’s a sad and bleak one.

Those she loves aren’t around her; those she loves are facing personal battles of their own; Stacey herself is at a low point. And for someone like Stacey, who does so much for others, this shouldn’t need to be the case.

So.

As a “birthday request”, if you like, I’d love for you to help me show Stacey she’s not alone. That while we might not physically be in Florida with her, we’re there in spirit and mind. That we care for someone that cares so selflessly for others.

Pop on over to Stacey’s post, and just leave some encouraging words for her. It can be anything you want, and as short or as long as you want. But let’s leave something, and show an amazing girl that folks are thinking of her.

With me?

Caring Across Continents – The Next Phase of #12for12k

12for12k social media charity

12for12k social media charity

“As I see it, there are two great forces of human nature: self-interest, and caring for others.” Bill Gates.

Say what you will about Bill Gates, the man has a great point. It’s the kind of thinking that drives me, and is almost a mantra for the whole 12for12k project that I started with the help of friends back in December 2008.

Since then, a ton of folks have become great friends and supporters, and taken the initial idea to heights I couldn’t have imagined when coming up with the concept.

Through your support, offline events and kindness, you’ve helped raise more than $100,000 for thirteen charities since 12for12k was born. Not to mention untold awareness for these charities and the folks that are trying to do good with them.

As mentioned previously, 12for12k took a bit of a back seat recently, but now it’s ready for the next phase.

Caring Across Continents

Targeted for Summer 2011, Caring Across Continents is something I’ve been thinking about for a long time. And with the global support community that 12for12k has, it’s the perfect platform for Caring Across Continents.

A week-long celebration of hope, change and belief, Caring Across Continents will see live events, fund-raising activities, social media get-togethers and much more, in every continent.

There will be lead cities, but there will also be smaller cities, towns and villages involved too. Whoever wants to be part of Caring Across Continents will have the opportunity to create something where they live.

Additionally, the charities supported will be specific to the countries involved, so you know that whatever good you do will not only be global, but local.

There’s obviously a lot of work to be done between now and next year. This is where you come in again.

Your support – either personally, or as a sponsor – has been amazing so far. And we want you to be involved again.

If you’re interested in hosting something where you live, email 12for12k (or leave your details in the comments below). Additionally, if you’re interested in partnering as a sponsor and you have experience with large-scale live events, we’d love to hear from you.

The 12for12k team will be putting together an info package soon on the event(s). We’ll then be reaching out to companies about partnering with us, so if you’d like to be part of something amazing next year, get in touch.

Through your help, 12for12k has been a huge success so far, and helped shape how social media can be used to raise awareness and funds for charities across the globe.

Let’s keep the good fight going – you in?

Welcome Back, #12for12k

Back in December 2008, I launched the 12for12k Challenge with the help of some great friends.

A social media-led charity initiative, it was a project that I always had belief in, but you never know how something like that will go. Thankfully, because of you, it went better than I could have ever hoped for.

It’s been quiet the last few months, as other commitments have eaten into time and resources (everyone involved in 12for12k gives their time for free). However, that’s about to change.

Come October 1, 12for12k is relaunching with renewed vigour. The current Facebook group will be migrating to the 12for12k Facebook page (and a message has been sent out about the change), while the website will be undergoing a revamp to be more interactive. A newsletter will also be coming your way soon (you can sign up below).

I want to thank everyone for supporting so far – none of what we achieved could have happened without you, and I hope you continue to be part of the 12for12k story.

We’re just getting started. Ready to continue the good fight?
